ArteNOM Selección de 1414 Reposado Tequila
ArteNOM required a change in Mexican law to exist — one brand, several distilleries, each bottle named for the NOM of the house that made it. Jake Lustig, an American raised in Oaxaca who's imported and written about agave spirits his whole adult life, asked his favorite producers of blanco, reposado, and añejo to make special batches showcasing their mastery of each style; Selección de 1414 is the reposado, from Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados — Destilería El Ranchito — in Arandas, the highland distillery behind Siembra Azul, Chamucos, and Gran Dovejo, run by the Vivanco family since 1994 on roughly 2,000 acres of estate agave at 5,400 feet. It's 100% estate-grown highland agave, fermented with wild yeast from the fields, double-distilled, rested in used ex-bourbon barrels — the label has cited four months in third-fill casks; some sources ten — and bottled at 40% ABV with no additives, its pale straw color left uncorrected. Tastings.com scored it 90; Wine Enthusiast found dried oregano and honey, a light, restrained palate of savory, almond, vanilla, and fleeting tropical fruit with a peppery exit. Drink Spirits praised the house's reverence for balance and the refusal to color it. Tequila Report: oak, agave, butterscotch, and cinnamon-stewed apple, then cooked agave, vanilla, cinnamon, caramelized plantain, and citrus — fuller and sweeter than the short rest suggests. Honest note: a reposado for the agave-first drinker. Neat, in a copita. 1414.
