La Gritona Reposado Tequila

La Gritona is made by women — Melly Barajas runs a distillery in the Los Altos highlands staffed almost entirely by women from the town of Valle de Guadalupe — and it's a reposado meant to taste like a blanco with a little rest. Barajas founded her distillery, NOM 1533, in the highlands of Jalisco, hiring women who'd never worked outside the home; the brand launched in 2012, the name means the screaming woman, and every bottle is hand-blown recycled glass from Guadalajara, so each is slightly different. The Reposado is 100% highland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in stone ovens, fermented naturally, double-distilled, rested eight months in used American oak barrels that once held Irish whiskey — refilled many times, so they lend little color and almost no vanilla — and bottled at 40% ABV, additive-free. Expect a pale-straw pour with a nose of cooked agave, green herbs, citrus, and a faint mineral salinity, opening into a dry, bright, agave-forward palate of pepper, lime, and a whisper of oak with a clean, brisk finish — nothing sweet, nothing soft.
