Padre Azul Reposado rests eight months in oak — the Austrian-Mexican tequila with the 270-gram metal skull and the hand-woven leather bottle, given four times the legal minimum in barrel. H.P. Eder, heir to a Tyrolean schnapps family, launched Padre Azul in 2016 with his Mexican father-in-law after falling in love with a woman from Guadalajara, to bring 100% agave tequila to Europe; the name comes from the expression qué padre — how fantastic — and it's made at Tres Mujeres, NOM 1466, in the lowlands of Amatitán, under master distiller Jesús Partida Meléndez. The Reposado is the house Blanco — 100% lowland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked, double-distilled — rested eight months in oak and bottled at 40% ABV in the leather-laced, skull-topped bottle. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, and butterscotch, opening into a thick, smooth, sweet palate of caramel, maple, and oak with a long, dessert-like finish. Honest note, and Agave Matchmaker's tasters say it bluntly: this is the sweetest, most candy-store end of reposado, and purists read additives — Long Island Lou reviewed the full line and wasn't gentle.
