El Alto is Patrón's prestige reposado — a blend of reposado, añejo, and extra añejo aged across eleven barrel types, and Tastings.com scored it 93. Patrón was founded in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley and built Hacienda Patrón, NOM 1492, in Atotonilco el Alto in the Los Altos highlands; Bacardí bought it in 2018 for $5.1 billion, and the house still cooks in brick ovens and crushes part of its agave with a tahona. El Alto — the high — is 100% blue Weber agave from the highest-altitude plots in Jalisco, tahona-crushed, distilled under master distiller David Rodríguez, and blended from reposado, añejo, and extra añejo components aged in eleven different barrel types — mostly hybrid casks with American oak bodies and French oak heads — then bottled at 40% ABV in a tall, faceted bottle with a heavy stopper. The Liquor Barn: the extra añejo share gives it the body and length of an older tequila — caramel, dried fruit, honey, vanilla, and a nutty barrel influence over floral highland agave. Expect a rich, silky, sweet palate of cooked agave, honey, caramel, and baking spice with a long, rounded finish. Honest note: this is Patrón's answer to Don Julio 1942 — a smooth, luxurious sipper built for the bottle-service crowd, priced like one, and better than most of that shelf.
