Duquesne Rhum Élevé Sous Bois 1L
Duquesne is one of the historic rhum labels of Martinique, with bottlings going back at least to the 1940s, when it was sold as a rhum from the Plantations du Val d'Or. Today it's produced by Maison La Mauny in Rivière-Pilote, in the south of the island, one of Martinique's largest producers, which also makes the La Mauny and Trois Rivières rhums and has been part of the Campari Group since 2019. Élevé sous bois means "raised under wood": under the AOC Martinique rules, this category of rhum agricole must spend at least 12 months in oak, and one RumX reviewer notes around 18 months for this bottling. It's distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice on Creole column stills and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 1-liter size. Tasters describe floral and green cane notes on the nose with vanilla and young wood, and a palate of floral cane, grass, spice and young oak, with a texture one reviewer called surprisingly velvety and full. Use it in a Ti' Punch with a little more depth, or in place of an aged rum in a Daiquiri or Old Fashioned.
