Gouverneur 1648 Gold 10 Year Rum
Gouverneur 1648 is a rum house from Saint-Martin, the island split between France and the Netherlands, founded by master blender Olivier to bring rum back to an island whose sugar industry went quiet when the Spring sugar factory in Marigot closed. The 1648 on the label marks the year Governor Robert de Lonvilliers de Poincy signed the agreements that made Saint-Martin a free, shared territory. Gouverneur doesn't run its own stills; Olivier travels the Caribbean choosing rums from other distilleries and blends them on the island, aging mainly in toasted American oak ex-bourbon barrels and toasted French Bordeaux casks. This Gold 10 Year, sold elsewhere as the XO, brings together rums from Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe and the Dominican Republic, made from both fresh-pressed cane juice and molasses, carrying a ten-year age statement. It's bottled at 42% ABV (84 proof), unfiltered, with no added sugar or coloring. Retail tasting notes describe toasted oak, candied mango, dried fruit and caramel on the nose, with dark chocolate, liquorice, beeswax and cinnamon on the palate. Sip it neat or with a single cube.
