Rhum J.M 10 Year 2008 Rum
Rhum J.M 2008 is a vintage-dated rhum agricole vieux from the J.M distillery at Habitation Fonds-Préville in Macouba, on the northern tip of Martinique at the foot of Mount Pelée, where the first distillations date to 1845 and the initials belong to Jean-Marie Martin, the merchant who converted the sugar mill into a distillery. Like everything J.M makes, it is AOC Martinique rhum agricole distilled from fresh sugarcane juice on the estate's two traditional Creole copper column stills, which are run to a maximum of 72% so the cane aromatics survive distillation. The 2008 vintage was aged for nearly ten years in carefully selected bourbon casks in the cellars at Fonds-Préville and then bottled at its natural cask strength of 41.9% ABV, with no water added after the barrel. That low natural strength is a hallmark of long tropical aging, where the angels take alcohol as well as volume. J.M describes the result only as having richness and depth of aroma and publishes no formal tasting notes for the vintage. Sold out at the distillery, it is a benchmark of what aged Martinique cane juice can do.
