Rodney Strong, a former Broadway dancer turned vintner, founded his Healdsburg winery in 1959 and planted Alexander's Crown in 1971 on a hilltop just south of Jimtown, producing Alexander Valley's first single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in 1974. The Klein family has owned the winery since 1989, and the wine is now made by Justin Seidenfeld and Greg Morthole with winegrower Ryan Decker. Only the top 15 acres of Block 1, Clone 4 Cabernet planted in well-drained red volcanic soil, go into this bottling. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in 100% new French oak and bottled at 14.5% alcohol. The style is full-bodied and rich: ripe black currant, blackberry and violet, soft, polished tannin and a long finish of dried herbs and mocha. Anthony Gismondi scored the 2019 94 points, finding blackcurrant, violet, blueberry, chocolate and dried herbs with dense, sweet, long tannins and a drinking window through 2030. Enjoy now with a decant or cellar 8 to 10 years. Pair with grilled lamb, prime rib or a mushroom and gruyere burger. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
