Ron Izlaco 10 Year Rum

Ron Izalco is the first brand from Phenomenal Spirits, founded in 2017 by Karthik Sudhir, a former Indian track athlete who studied distillation at Moonshine University. Phenomenal does not distill: Sudhir sources aged molasses rums from undisclosed Central American distilleries, each straight-aged in ex-bourbon barrels, and blends them in California, with Nicaraguan rum for structure, Panamanian for caramel and length, and Guatemalan for molasses and toasted oak. The label is the Izalco volcano in El Salvador, which erupted almost continuously from 1770 to 1958. The 10 Year, launched in Bordeaux in 2018, is aged a minimum of ten years and bottled at 43% ABV, a touch above the 40% most solera-aged Central American rums carry, and it took Double Gold and the Rum Trophy at the 2019 International Spirits Challenge. Published tasting notes describe vanilla, milk chocolate, brown sugar, dark cherries, dried apricots, oak, orange and toffee on the nose, a palate of spicy oak, marmalade, rum-soaked raisins, prunes, dark caramel and vanilla with a slightly herbal middle, and a long, rich, spicy finish. Sudhir calls it balanced and less sweet than its neighbors, a sipper that also works in an Old Fashioned.
