Bound & Determined Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bound & Determined is the Napa Valley Cabernet from Roots Run Deep Winery, which Mark Albrecht founded in 2005 after selling his house and everything in it to fund the first vintage, with no outside investors. The winery built its name on Educated Guess, the Napa County Cabernet that has collected Best Buy and Best of Class honors, and Bound & Determined is the step up: fruit from the Napa Valley AVA rather than the broader county, with the name a nod to the stubbornness it took to get the label off the ground. It is a full-bodied Cabernet, around 14.8% ABV, and the winemaker describes black currant and Bing cherry aromas lifted by lilac, wild spice and wet slate, then black cherry, cassis, vanilla and oak on a palate with real depth. The 2017 vintage drew 90 points from James Suckling, who found grilled black plum, black peppercorn, praline and toffee with firm, chewy tannins.
