Rum Explorer - Austrailia
Rum Explorer is a series from Château du Breuil, the Calvados house in Normandy's Pays d'Auge, which selects rums from distilleries around the world and brings them home to its own cellars for a final period of maturation before bottling, and this edition comes from Beenleigh Artisan Distillers in Queensland. The rum chosen for this release was matured in ex-bourbon casks before travelling to Normandy, where it was finished in the ex-Calvados casks that are the signature of the series. It is bottled at 43% ABV, and the Australia edition took a bronze medal at the 2022 IWSC. The published tasting notes describe a nose of wood, vanilla and cedar that opens up to iris-like florals, licorice, honey, cocoa and cinnamon, with a wide palate, good length and silky tannins from the apple-brandy casks. Australian rum is almost never seen on US shelves, and the Calvados finish makes this one doubly unusual: it drinks like a cross between a molasses rum and a Normandy digestif, and it is best appreciated neat or with a single cube.
