Rum Explorer - Guyana

Rum Explorer is a series from Château du Breuil, the Calvados house in Normandy's Pays d'Auge that selects rums from distilleries around the world and brings them to its own cellars for a final period of maturation before bottling, and the Guyana edition comes from Demerara Distillers Limited, the only rum distillery left in Guyana and the keeper of the last wooden stills in the world. DDL's Diamond plant on the east bank of the Demerara River houses the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, the Versailles single wooden pot still and the Enmore wooden Coffey still alongside modern column stills, and each produces a distinct marque. This is a molasses-based pot still rum, aged for five years and bottled at 43% ABV. Tasters on RumX describe red fruits, blackberry and cherry, caramelized and candied notes and dried fruit on the nose, with the palate adding smoky and barrel notes, and one reviewer noted that it tastes like the Port Mourant still. For anyone who has priced Velier or independent Demerara bottlings lately, this is a far more accessible way into the deep, dark, heavy style that made Guyanese rum famous, and it is excellent in a rum old fashioned.
