Rum Explorer - Thailand
Rum Explorer is a series from Château du Breuil, the Calvados house in Normandy's Pays d'Auge, which selects rums from distilleries around the world and brings them home to its own cellars for a final period of maturation before bottling, and the Thailand edition is one of the very few Thai rums sold in the United States. It comes from a modern distillery in Pathum Thani province, just north of Bangkok, where it is distilled from molasses on a column still. The rum was aged for five years before being shipped to Normandy, where it spent several months in cask in the Château du Breuil cellars before bottling at 42% ABV. Tasters on RumX describe tropical vanilla, honey and coconut husk on the nose with candied fruit, and a woody, peppery palate with vanilla and caramel and a short finish, and several compare it loosely to the lighter rums of the French Antilles. Thailand has distilled cane spirit for generations, mostly for a domestic market, so this is a rare chance to taste the country's rum style, and the coconut-and-vanilla profile makes it a natural fit for tiki drinks and anything built with pineapple or lime.
