Alambique Serrano comes from one of the most improbable terroirs in rum: the steep hillsides of Santa María Tlalixtac in Oaxaca's Cañada region, where the Krassel family has distilled sugarcane spirit for three generations. Max Krassel, a German immigrant, arrived in Veracruz in 1917 and eventually settled in Oaxaca making aguardiente on a coffee farm with a handmade still; his sons hauled it to remote villages by mule, and in the 1970s Max Jr. delivered it by plane. Today brothers Isidoro, Rommel, William, and Axel Krassel Peralta hand-harvest organic Java-varietal cane grown between 2,500 and 3,800 feet, press it in mobile mills carried by mule, ferment the juice with wild yeast in steel and pine vats, and distill on custom-built column and copper pot stills. 3 Años First Edition was the brand's first age-stated release: a 12-cask blend of pot still and Krassel-column rum aged a minimum of three years in new French oak, proofed with Río Blanco distilled water to 46.1% ABV, with no added sugar or coloring. Expect orange peel, cinnamon roll, apple juice, raisin cake, and black pepper on the nose, opening into cinnamon butter, rolled oats, orange marmalade, red-hot candy, and a cooling menthol finish.
