Añejo Cuatro was launched in 2018 as the entry point to Bacardí's premium aged range — the step between the everyday Carta Oro and the Reserva Ocho — and it does one job well: it upgrades every drink you'd have made with a gold rum. It follows the method Don Facundo Bacardí Massó pioneered in Santiago de Cuba in 1862: molasses rum from column stills, charcoal filtered, then aged a minimum of four years in American oak under the Puerto Rican sun, with some five- and six-year-old rum in the blend, bottled at 40% ABV. Expect an apricot-gold pour with oak, tobacco, brown sugar, and vanilla on the nose, opening into a soft, easy palate of cane syrup, vanilla, orchard fruit, cinnamon, and caramel, finishing warm and dry with a peppery sting and light char. Good Spirits News summed it up: an easy sipper and an even easier mixer, exceptionally smooth. Paste Magazine went further, finding it more nuanced than Mount Gay Eclipse side by side — an unexpected result. Honest note: the Fat Rum Pirate saw little reason to choose it over the Ocho for a few dollars more, and that's a fair point for sippers.
