The base is Ocho itself, the family's original premium rum inspired by a recipe from 1862, aged eight to twelve years in American oak in the Caribbean; Maestro de Ron Troy Arquiza then rested it two months in former rye whiskey casks and bottled it at a higher 90 proof (45% ABV) rather than the standard 80, each bottle carrying a unique marque number and year. Good Spirits News put it best: a spicy rum, not a spiced rum — the rye casks add a vibrant tastiness, with rye, caramel, toasted vanilla, young tobacco, and baking spice running throughout, a medium-heavy body, and a fairly long finish that leaves a tingling memory. Expect sweet dried fruit and vanilla up front from the Ocho, then a peppery grain-spice edge that no other Bacardí carries. The extra proof matters: it gives this bottle enough backbone for a Rum Old Fashioned or Manhattan riff, and it makes a genuinely interesting tiki base.
