Cadenhead's Classic Rum

Cadenhead's is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland — founded in Aberdeen in 1842, now based in Campbeltown — and its rums are bottled the way it bottles whisky: no added sugar, no coloring, no chill filtration, and a label that tells you where it came from. Classic Rum is the house blend, and Rum Ratings calls it just about the Platonic ideal of blended rum. It's a five-year-old marriage of rums from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Panama, and Trinidad, bottled at 50% ABV in the stubby bottle with the gold tube, with a small label stating plainly that only water has been added. Rum Ratings found salted caramel, oak, banana, mango, a hint of funk, and cola spice, with some bite that shows its youth pleasantly, responding well to fifteen minutes of air — everything you want from a rum: natural dark color, rich caramel without sugar, a hint of funk and brine, admirable strength, suited to mixing or sipping. Master of Malt's reviewers found rich fruit, tobacco, almond, and chewy toffee, dry and not too heavy, an interesting alternative to Black Tot and really good value. The Fat Rum Pirate confirmed by hydrometer it has no added sugar. Honest note: some find it hot on first pour, and one taster wanted less Panamanian column still in the mix.
