Camikara 12 exists because someone forgot about the barrels. Piccadily Distilleries — the northern Indian house behind Indri single malt, which scores in the 90s with Whisky Advocate's panel — had laid down pot-still rum from fresh sugarcane juice, agricole-style, in American oak in the hills of Haryana and left it there through twelve summers of extreme heat. When the casks were rediscovered, only 6.6% of the original volume had survived an angels' share running 10 to 12 percent a year, but what remained was good enough to launch a brand. Camikara means "liquid gold" in Sanskrit, and this is its inaugural, ultra-limited release: 100% cane juice, pot distilled on the Indri stills, twelve years in bourbon barrels, bottled at 50% ABV with no added color, flavor, sugar, or spice. Piccadily's notes: honey, ginger, toffee, raisins, prunes, and leather on the nose, then honey, vanilla, bitter chocolate, ripe banana, orange peel, and charred wood, finishing on fruitcake. Paste called it serious rum. The Lone Caner admired it, found the cane-juice origins mostly overtaken by the long hot aging with the barrel doing the heavy lifting, and noted a hydrometer reading suggesting a touch more than the label claims — and still called it a treat worth sharing. Rum Ratings: a real pleasure, a great value, in a box that opens like double doors onto gold satin. Honest note: scarce, and tasting-panel opinions split on the funk. Neat, slowly.
