2 Masters is Dictador's luxury series — launched in 2018 for collectors, each release a collaboration between Hernán Parra, Dictador's master blender in Cartagena, and a master from another spirit — and the Hardy edition pairs Colombian rum with one of Cognac's oldest houses. Destilería Colombiana was founded in 1913 by Don Julio Arango y Ferro; its rum, made from virgin sugarcane honey and distilled in copper pot and column stills, is almost entirely exported. For this edition, vintage Dictador rum aged in Colombia was shipped to Cognac, where Bénédicte Hardy's house — founded in 1863 and famous for its long-aged Grande Champagne cognacs — finished it in casks that had held their cognac before bottling at cask strength in a numbered decanter; check your label for the vintage, ABV, and outturn. The result is the closest rum gets to cognac: expect Dictador's coffee, cocoa, and toffee layered with the Hardy cask's dried apricot, rancio, honeyed grape, and fine French oak, the cognac wood softening the rum's edges into something silky and floral, finishing very long and elegant. Honest note: this is a collector's and investor's bottle in a numbered run, priced accordingly — and of the 2 Masters editions it's the most seamless, because Dictador's house style already leans toward cognac.
