The Distillery Collection is Diplomático taken apart. Destilerías Unidas, at the foot of the Andes in La Miel, Venezuela, runs three kinds of still, and every Diplomático rum is a blend of what they make — so in 2017 the house released No. 1 and No. 2 to let drinkers taste the components on their own. No. 1 is the batch kettle: a discontinuous still that's neither pot nor column, a Canadian design from the 1950s that produces a spirit somewhere between the two, and the backbone of the Reserva Exclusiva. It's distilled from sugarcane honey and molasses, aged around six years in ex-bourbon oak, and bottled at 47% ABV in a numbered, dated bottle with the batch and month of distillation on the label. Bespoke Unit found it light and smooth, with an intensity that shines through where the Reserva Exclusiva can be overwhelmingly sweet. Expect a cleaner, drier, more spirit-forward Diplomático: a nose of vanilla, toasted oak, light caramel, and a fruity ester note, opening into a medium-bodied palate of toffee, dried fruit, and gentle spice without the syrupy sweetness of the flagship, finishing warm and moderately long. Honest note: this is a collector's and educator's bottle — The Lone Caner noted a persistent lightness across the Collection that some will find a limitation — and it's for drinkers who love the brand and want to understand it.
