The Distillery Collection is Diplomático taken apart. Destilerías Unidas, at the foot of the Andes in La Miel, Venezuela, runs three kinds of still, and every Diplomático rum is a blend of what they make — so in 2017 the house released No. 1 and No. 2 to let drinkers taste the components on their own. No. 2 is the Barbet still: a French-designed continuous column, imported to Venezuela in 1959, that produces a lighter, cleaner, more aromatic spirit than the pot and kettle — the component that gives Mantuano its lift and the Reserva Exclusiva its balance. It's distilled from sugarcane honey and molasses, aged around six years in ex-bourbon oak, and bottled at 47% ABV in a numbered, dated bottle with the batch and month of distillation on the label. Expect the lightest of the three: a bright, floral nose of vanilla, coconut, light citrus, and fresh oak, opening into a clean, delicate, gently sweet palate of white fruit, toffee, and soft spice, finishing crisp and moderately long. Honest note: this is the subtlest bottle in the Collection and, by The Lone Caner's account, the one where the house's persistent lightness is most audible — a collector's and educator's rum for drinkers who want to understand how Diplomático is built rather than a standalone powerhouse.
