Facundo Eximo Aged Rum
Facundo is Bacardí's proof that it can make serious rum — a four-bottle collection launched in 2013 and named for Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, who founded the company in Santiago de Cuba in 1862 — and Eximo is the one that's made differently. Where most rums are aged first and blended after, Eximo was blended before aging: the master blender married unaged spirit with one- and two-year-old rums in used American oak bourbon barrels, then aged the marriage ten years in the Bahamas, before blending to 40% ABV and bottling in a heavy decanter with a raised sunburst X for the decade inside. Got Rum? found it dynamically interesting — a lot going on from first sip to robust finish, and a very different experience from Neo and Exquisito. Rum Ratings' drinkers: honey, caramel, oak, and a touch of bourbon, smoother and oakier than a normal Puerto Rican rum, surprised to learn it was Bacardí, and the better value in the range — several rank it above the Exquisito. Honest note: Inu A Kena wanted to love it and found the $65 price and a wobbly cap hard to square with a 40% Spanish-style rum, and enthusiasts who want funk won't find it here. What it is: a polished, oak-forward, cognac-leaning sipper from the biggest rum house on earth, for a Rum Old Fashioned or a neat pour that shows Bacardí's ceiling. Blended first, aged ten years, bottled in a decanter.
