Facundo Paraiso Aged Rum

Paraíso is the top of Bacardí's Facundo collection — the four-rum range launched in 2013 and named for Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, who founded the company in Santiago de Cuba in 1862 — and it's built from the oldest stocks the company will admit to. It's a blend of rums aged seventeen to twenty-three years in ex-bourbon oak, distilled on Bacardí's column stills, then finished in old cognac barrels and bottled at 40% ABV in a heavy crystal decanter with a wooden presentation box, labeled XA, extra añejo. The Lone Caner found a briny, soft, mildly fruity nose of almond, vanilla, Toblerone, tobacco, grassy herbs, and oak, and a palate that, blend of old rums or not, hews closely to the formula of its mega-selling downmarket cousins — sweet, light, and, in his words, too faint, wondering why it wasn't bottled at 45%. Rum Ratings' drinkers who loved the Eximo and Exquisito found the Paraíso simply too expensive to risk. Honest note: this is a luxury bottle at a luxury price, and much of it is the decanter — enthusiasts who want intensity should look at cask-strength independents at a fraction of the cost. What it is: the smoothest, softest, most cognac-like rum Bacardí makes, for the drinker who wants the founder's name on the most expensive thing in the collection.
