Convocation is Mark XXVIII of the Exceptional Cask Selection — a Madeira-finished release that had Rum Revelations asking for more Madeira, please. Foursquare is the distillery Fred Minnick dubbed the Pappy of rum: the Seale family's operation in St. Philip, Barbados, where Richard Seale has led the fight for unadulterated rum — no sugar, no color, no additives, no filtration — and every drop is distilled, aged, blended, and bottled on the island. Convocation is a Single Blended Rum, pot and Coffey column distillate, tropically aged fourteen years in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Madeira casks, and bottled at 62% ABV in 2024 in limited quantities — the highest proof in the recent slate. A convocation is a formal gathering, and Rum Revelations left the deeper meaning to others while scoring it just shy of the sister release Equidem — enjoyment level darn close. Madeira is Foursquare's signature second cask, shared with Sagacity and Redoutable, bringing dried fruit, nuts, and a savory, saline oxidation: expect a nose of raisin, dried apricot, walnut, toffee, and the house's vanilla and coconut, opening into a dense, powerful palate where the Madeira's caramelized fruit and nutty tang play against toasted oak, baking spice, and the signature buttery texture, the 62% carrying it all with real heat that water tames, finishing very long.
