Hampden Estate 1753 Single Jamaican Rum
1753 is Hampden's new core bottling — named for the estate's founding year, and built to sit between the gentle 8 Year and the ferocious HLCF Overproof. Hampden Estate in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, is the funkiest distillery on earth, its process unchanged since the 18th century: wild fermentation lasting up to two weeks in vats that are a two-century-old bacterial micro-habitat, dunder and muck-pit additions, double-retort copper pot stills, tropical aging. 1753 is the HLCF marque — Hampden Light Continental Flavoured, 476.9 grams of esters per hectoliter, the same mark as the cult Rum Fire, mid-range for Hampden and enormously high for anyone else — 100% pot still, aged three years in ex-bourbon oak on the estate, and bottled at 46% ABV with no sugar, color, or additives. The Auditor called it a great bottle: grilled pineapple, mango, allspice, soy sauce, orange peel, minerality, black tea, and ginger, very well balanced, packed with flavor, and among the most approachable aged Hampdens. The Rum Barrel: overripe banana, ripe pineapple, nail varnish, allspice, black tea, marzipan, stone fruit, cacao nib, sour cherry, and a touch of diesel — very much classic Hampden. Rum Ratings' drinkers: right between the 8 Year and the HLCF Classic, all the funk and less of the bite, and possibly the best Mai Tai rum. Honest note: it's still very funky for a newcomer. For a Mai Tai, a Daiquiri, a Jungle Bird, or neat, it's Hampden's new everyday.
