The Maverick is a birthday rum — named for the honoree and built from three of Hampden's marques — and Memphis Rum Club calls it a really great blend. Hampden Estate in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, is the funkiest distillery on earth, its process unchanged since the 18th century: wild fermentation lasting up to two weeks in vats that are a two-century-old bacterial micro-habitat, dunder and muck-pit additions, double-retort copper pot stills, tropical aging. The Maverick is 50% HGML from 2018, 40% LFCH from 2020, and 10% C<>H from 2021 — a mid-to-high-ester marque, a low-ester marque, and a high-ester one — all molasses-and-dunder pot-still rum aged in ex-bourbon oak at the estate, bottled at 59% ABV with no sugar, color, or additives in a limited release. Memphis Rum Club found fresh pineapple, banana, caramel, underripe blueberry, kiwi, caramelized grapefruit, and vanilla wafer on the nose, then grilled pineapple, rotting banana, blueberry yogurt, caramel, and plum, finishing long, funky, and warm with vanilla, cooked blueberry, and stewed plum — the HGML and C<>H marques shining. Expect a blend that reads fruitier and rounder than the HLCF bottlings, with the C<>H adding a high, wild top note. Honest note: this is a limited estate release at overproof strength — a bottle for the Hampden collector who knows the marques and wants to taste a new combination.
