Kuleana Rum Works was founded in 2013 in Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, growing forty varieties of heirloom sugarcane on a zero-waste, solar-irrigated farm; Hōkūlei, released in 2022, is the top of its range and the first to include the distillery's own aged agricole. It's a blend of seven rums aged eighteen months to eighteen years: four molasses base rums from Panama, Nicaragua, Barbados, and Venezuela aged two to eight years; Kuleana's own Aged Hawaiian Rum Agricole, fresh cane juice aged eighteen months in cognac barrels, for body; and older accent rums, married and bottled at 43% ABV with no sugar, color, or flavoring. Kuleana's notes are a kaleidoscope: ripe banana, saltwater taffy, toasted pineapple, lime zest, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, jerk spice, mangosteen, lilikoi, Medjool date, dry sherry, rum-soaked raisin, and toasted oak with a hint of koji.
