MacNair's Exploration is the rum range launched in 2021 by the GlenAllachie Distillers Company — the Speyside house Walker, one of Scotch whisky's most decorated blenders, revived after BenRiach and GlenDronach — under its MacNair's Boutique House of Spirits label, beginning with a trio of Panamanian rums chosen for the country's volcanic cane-growing soil. The 7 Year Old Peated is molasses rum initially matured seven years in American oak in Panama's tropical climate, then shipped to the GlenAllachie distillery, blended by Walker, and given more than two years of secondary maturation in casks that previously held peated GlenAllachie single malt, bottled at 46% ABV with natural color and no chill filtration. GlenAllachie's notes: a rich presence of plantain, apricot, coconut, and cigar smoke on the nose, then layers of peach, mango, and pineapple with burnt sugar, mocha, and orange zest. The Rum Barrel, comparing it head to head with the unpeated 7, found the peat-cask finish the only difference — and a genuinely distinct result. Expect tropical fruit and caramel wrapped in a gentle, sweet smoke rather than an Islay blast, the peat reading as cigar and mocha over the rum's light Panamanian base.
