Mount Gay Master Blender Collection The PX Sherry Cask Expression

Paste called this one of Mount Gay's most impressive bottles yet — and it does the nearly unthinkable: twenty-year-old Barbados rum finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Mount Gay is the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world, with a deed from 1703, in the parish of St. Lucy at the northern tip of Barbados, and the Master Blender Collection is its annual limited experiment, launched in 2018 with the Peat Smoke Expression and carried by Trudiann Branker — the island's first woman master blender — through Pot Still, Port Cask, Andean Oak, and Madeira Cask. For the sixth release, Branker went through the distillery's oldest bonds and found twenty-year-old blends of pot and column rum with the body to stand up to a finish, aged in ex-American whiskey casks in Barbados since 2003, then given one more year in PX sherry casks — the sweet, sun-dried-grape wine wood that Macallan and GlenDronach live on — bottled at 45% ABV, non-chill filtered, no sugar, 4,200 bottles. Mount Gay's notes: maraschino cherry, stewed fruit, charred oak, and butterscotch on the nose, then red fruit, salted caramel, banana, toasted vanilla, and velvety oak. Master of Malt: stewed plum, salted caramel, nutmeg, dark cherry, salted peanut, and banoffee pie, long and dark and sweet. Paste found it shockingly well balanced for its age.
