Black Barrel is the Mount Gay that got better — Rum Revelations was never a fan of the old blend and calls Trudiann Branker's new one a big improvement, much more interesting and approachable. Mount Gay is the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world, with a deed from 1703, in the parish of St. Lucy at the northern tip of Barbados; Rémy Cointreau took full control in 2014, and in 2019 Branker became the first woman to hold the title of master blender in the island's history. Her Black Barrel Double Cask Blend is molasses rum from copper pot and column stills, aged in ex-bourbon oak and then given a second, shorter maturation in deeply charred bourbon barrels — the black barrel of the name — bottled at 43% ABV with no additives. The double maturation is the point: the heavy char pulls out vanilla, toasted spice, and a smoky, dark-caramel depth that the lighter Eclipse doesn't have. Expect a nose of vanilla, brown sugar, toasted oak, and a faint charred-wood smoke over the Bajan signature of banana and caramel, opening into a bolder, spicier, medium-full palate of toffee, baking spice, and oak with a peppery warmth, finishing moderately long and dry. It took Gold at the IWSC in 2021. RumX's 217 reviewers make it the community pick for cocktails and mixing. Honest note: it's a bar-and-cocktail rum first, though the new blend sips well over a cube.
