Eclipse Navy Strength is Mount Gay's everyday rum at the proof the Royal Navy issued it. Mount Gay is the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world, with a deed from 1703, in the parish of St. Lucy at the northern tip of Barbados, and Eclipse — named for the total solar eclipse and Halley's comet that shared the sky over Barbados in 1910 — has been its flagship since 1911. Navy Strength takes the same blend of copper pot and column molasses rums, aged in ex-bourbon oak, and bottles it at 57% ABV — the historic navy proof at which rum-soaked gunpowder would still ignite — with no additives. The higher proof does what it does to the Eclipse profile: expect the Bajan signature of banana, vanilla, caramel, and light oak concentrated and given heat, with more of the pot-still's fruit and a peppery, spirit-forward warmth, finishing longer and drier than the standard bottling.
