The distillery sits in a valley at Macouba on the flanks of Mont Pelée at the northern tip of Martinique, where Jean-Marie Martin bought the Fonds-Préville estate in 1845 and marked his barrels with his initials; when Pelée erupted in 1902 and destroyed Saint-Pierre, the blast went west and the distillery survived.
