Ron Abuelo XII Anos Two Oaks Rum
Paste called Two Oaks a decadent, spicy delight that whiskey drinkers should adore. Ron Abuelo is made by Varela Hermanos at Hacienda San Isidro in Pesé, Panama, where Don José Varela Blanco built the first sugar mill in the newly independent Republic in 1908; the family still grows and mills its own cane. Two Oaks XII is a blend of rums aged eight to more than forty years — averaging just over eleven — in ex-bourbon casks, then finished nine months in first-fill, extra-charred virgin American oak barrels built for Abuelo by a Napa Valley cooperage and cut on the inside for maximum extraction, bottled at 40% ABV. Master of Malt: richly smoky, creamy sweetness from the bourbon casks alongside the char, peppery oak spice, chocolate-covered raisin, vanilla, caramelized almond, and milky coffee. RumX's 169 reviewers love the rich oak and gentle smoke — vanilla, caramel, roasted notes, blond tobacco, toasted coconut — smooth and round with the two-cask influence clearly present. Drinkhacker found sweet plum, cherry, and chocolate, then maple syrup, a sherried note, and an oxidized Madeira finish — complex, and for him too sweet. Honest note: Rum Ratings measured around 24 grams per liter of sugar, sweet but not extreme; drinkers who want dry should reach for the standard 12. For a cigar, a Rum Old Fashioned, or neat for the bourbon drinker crossing over, it's Abuelo through fresh char.
