SelvaRey White Rum
Bruno Mars wanted this rum to sell on its merits, not his name — so for years the brand's origin was kept secret, and Spirits Review, sworn to silence after touring the distillery in 2014, called it one of the best aged white rums out there. SelvaRey — roughly, king of the jungle — is made in Pesé, in Panama's Herrera province, by Francisco "Don Pancho" Fernández, the Cuban-born former minister of rum who's the most revered blender in Central America; Mars is a quarter-owner and designed the tall, slender bottle. White is a blend of column-still rums aged three to five years in ex-bourbon casks, then carbon-filtered to remove the color, bottled at 40% ABV — an aged white in the Cuban tradition rather than a young spirit. Bevvy found soft vanilla and fruit on the nose, then bolder on the palate: richer vanilla, lush tropical fruit, coconut. Rum Ratings' drinkers are unusually warm: the only white rum one will sip on the rocks, with coconut and aged-rum flavors like a Barbados rum, an insane steal at its price, and next to Bacardí, which one called rubbing alcohol by comparison, delicious. Honest note: it's a soft, clean Panamanian white — not a funky pot-still Jamaican — and that's its appeal. For a Daiquiri, a Mojito, a Piña Colada, or neat over ice the way Cuban whites were meant to be drunk, it's Don Pancho's white with a pop star's bottle.
