Gekkeikan Tokubetsu Junmai Sake
Gekkeikan Tokubetsu Junmai is the Kyoto brewery's special-designation junmai in the frosted cobalt-blue bottle, from the house founded in 1637 by Jiemon Okura in Fushimi, the sake district whose soft spring water has fed brewers for centuries and whose name, meaning "laurel crown," became the best-selling sake brand in the United States. Tokubetsu means special and signals a junmai made with a higher polish or a premium rice than the grade requires; this one is brewed in Fushimi from Japanese rice with no added distilled alcohol and bottled at 15.6% ABV in a 720ml bottle. The importer describes a smooth texture with subtle melon and banana and a clean finish carrying a hint of spice, a classic Kyoto profile that is softer and rounder than the California-brewed Gekkeikan everyday bottles. Serve it chilled or slightly warmed, in a wine glass or a traditional ochoko, and pair it with grilled fish, yakitori, dumplings or a bowl of ramen.
