Schrader Cellars was founded in 1998 by Fred Schrader, a former art dealer who applied a collector's eye for pedigree to Napa Cabernet, betting that the finest wine must begin with the finest grapes. He secured prized rows in Andy Beckstoffer's To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, the most storied Cabernet site in California, and hired Thomas Rivers Brown, who went on to earn more perfect scores at Schrader than any winemaker in Napa history. Brown still makes the wines. Schrader's Napa Valley Cabernets are built from single blocks and clones, typically 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged about 18 to 20 months in 100% new French oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered around 15.5% ABV in 750ml. The house style is opulent and precise: crème de cassis, blackberry liqueur, black raspberry and violets over graphite, crushed rock, espresso and sweet spice, with a seamless, full-bodied palate, ultra-fine tannins and a finish that runs well past a minute. Critics routinely award Schrader's To Kalon bottlings 97 to 100 points; they reward 20 years of cellaring. Serve with prime rib, lamb loin or wagyu. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
