Smoke Wagon comes from Nevada H&C Distilling Co., founded in 2012 in Las Vegas by Aaron Chepenik and Jonathan Hensleigh, and it's built entirely on blending rather than distilling — the whiskey is sourced from MGP in Indiana, aged in a century-old brick warehouse, and married to a specific target. The Small Batch, released in 2016, exists to solve a real problem the company describes candidly: rye ages faster than corn, so their young barrels had great rye spice but thin mouthfeel, while older barrels had gorgeous creamy sweetness with the spice aged out. The answer was combining multiple vintages of the same 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley mash bill — young for punch, old for body. Non-chill filtered, bottled at 100 proof. Expect spicy caramel, cherry, plum, white pepper, and vanilla bean on the nose, with citrus, dried fig, and caramel creaminess giving way to a bright burst of rye spice, finishing medium with cinnamon, ginger, and dry oak.
