Smoke Wagon Straight Rye Whiskey Blender's Select is the cask-strength rye from Smoke Wagon, the Las Vegas brand from Aaron Chepenik's Nevada H&C Distilling that built a cult following for its blending of MGP stocks. For Blender's Select, the team married barrels from two very different Indiana rye recipes: a soft, sweet 51% rye, 45% corn and 4% malted barley whiskey, and a big, bold 51% rye, 49% malted barley whiskey, then bottled the blend at cask strength, 117.8 proof.
Bourbon Guy called it delicious and dangerously drinkable neat, with cedar, mint and cinnamon sugar on the nose, cedar, cinnamon, brown sugar, cherry and mint on the palate, and a warm medium-to-long finish of mint, cherry and cinnamon, adding that a splash of water brings out a malty nougat note. Smoke Wagon describes caramelized sugar, toasted oak, dark chocolate and dried fruit leading into toffee, butterscotch, candied citrus and rye pepper, with the malted barley adding roasted nuttiness. It leads with sweetness and finishes with fire, and it is one of the more distinctive high-proof ryes on the shelf.
