Johns launched it through his Hazelwood Spirits Company, and the whiskey is aged and bottled in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with distillate produced in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. What genuinely sets it apart is the grain: a proprietary four-grain mash of heirloom blue corn, yellow corn, rye, and malted barley. Blue corn has been prized in the Southwest for centuries and almost never appears in bourbon — it brings a sweet, floral richness and nutty undertone that yellow-corn bourbon simply doesn't have. The flagship Straight Bourbon ages five-plus years in a deliberate mix of new American white oak barrels, both 30 and 53 gallon, across char levels No. 2 through No. 5, then bottles non-chill filtered at 93 proof with no additives. Expect cornmeal and yellow cake on the nose with tobacco, white pepper, and charred oak, moving into caramel, vanilla, and baking spice.
