This is the third release in Springbank's five-part Sherry Wood Series, which showcases the distillery's spirit through increasingly long stays in different styles of sherry cask, working up in intensity from Pedro Ximénez through Palo Cortado, Amontillado, Fino, and eventually Manzanilla. This bottling was distilled in July 2014 and matured 5 years in ex-bourbon casks before an additional 5 years in fresh Amontillado sherry casks sourced from Springbank's regular supplier, Miguel Martín, bottled September 2024 at 55% ABV with only 9,900 bottles produced. Official notes describe an earthy, musty nose with hazelnut, maraschino cherry, and blood orange, moving into cured meats, gorse, and tobacco box balanced by sweet coconut and treacle, finishing dry with wood shavings and tarragon. Reception has been honestly more divided than some of Springbank's other sherry releases — Whiskybase's community average sits at a respectable but unspectacular 87.91 out of 100, and at least two independent reviewers found the Amontillado influence ran a bit too heavy, with one describing it as genuinely overpowering the distillery's own character until a splash of water helped rebalance things. Worth trying, but go in expecting an assertive, sherry-forward dram rather than a subtle one.
