This is the second release in Springbank's five-part Sherry Wood Series, and by most accounts one of its strongest so far. Distilled in July 2013, it spent 6 years in refill bourbon barrels before an additional 4 years in fresh Palo Cortado hogsheads made from Spanish oak, bottled September 2023 at 55% ABV, with 10,200 bottles produced. Palo Cortado has a reputation as the rarest of all sherry styles, and reviewers consistently praise how well it plays with Springbank's spirit compared to some of the series' other, heavier-handed cask finishes. WhiskyNotes called it the outright winner among the samples they tried of the whole sherry series, while Words of Whisky found real improvement over the previous Pedro Ximénez release, with a much better balance between cask and distillate. Expect red fruit sweetness (strawberry jam, dried apricot, cranberry) with caramelized nuts, nougat, and a creamy, buttery hint on the nose, moving into toffee, orange marmalade, salted caramel, and dark chocolate on the palate, with hardly any of Springbank's usual funk pushing through — a lighter, fruitier take on the distillery's signature character.
