Stony Hill Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon
Stony Hill Vineyard was founded in 1943 when Fred and Eleanor McCrea bought 168 acres on the slopes of Spring Mountain and planted the vines that made it, in Eric Asimov's words, a pioneer of California Chardonnay since its first vintage in 1952. The estate was acquired in 2018 by Ted and Laddie Hall of Long Meadow Ranch, who converted it to organic farming and brought in winemaker Jaimee Motley, and it now produces a small amount of estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the volcanic blocks at the summit of the vineyard between 400 and 1,200 feet on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas. Made in a restrained mountain style and bottled at just 13.5% alcohol, the 2019 shows Bing cherry, cassis, pomegranate seed, singed bay leaf, and cacao per the winery, with breadth and presence on the palate, lacy tannins, and a delicate, persistent finish given freshness by late spring rains. Wine Spectator rated it 91 points, citing red currant, raspberry, and mulled cherry with bay leaf, pine forest, and wet earth, drinking through 2032. This 750ml ships in a wood box; pair it with roast lamb or duck breast. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
