Stranahan's began with a barn fire. In 1998, volunteer firefighter and recreational moonshiner Jess Graber responded to a blaze on George Stranahan's property in Woody Creek, Colorado — Stranahan being the founder of Flying Dog Brewery and a serious whiskey enthusiast. They lost the barn but found a shared obsession, and Graber asked if he could use one of the surviving barns for distilling. His breakthrough came from distilling a leftover Flying Dog beer mash of 100% malted barley, which produced a remarkably fruity distillate he aged in new charred American oak — landing squarely on what's now called American Single Malt years before the category existed. Founded in 2004 as Colorado's first legal distillery since Prohibition, with its first bottles released in 2006, Stranahan's helped kick off the entire Colorado craft distilling boom and coined the "Rocky Mountain Whiskey" designation. The recipe is still four ingredients: 100% malted barley grown in the Rockies, yeast, Rocky Mountain water, and time in the barrel. It won Whisky Advocate's Artisan Whiskey of the Year in 2010 and Double Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and remains the top-selling American single malt in the country.
