Swanson Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Swanson Vineyards was founded in 1985 by W. Clarke Swanson Jr., heir to the Swanson food family, who planted Bordeaux varieties in Oakville and built a reputation for Merlot and Cabernet when few in Napa were doing either seriously. The estate was acquired by Vintage Wine Estates in 2021 and is now part of the Sunrise Hills portfolio, but the winemaking stays rooted in classic Napa Valley Cabernet. Fruit is sourced from Napa County vineyards including the Oakville home ranch, fermented in small lots and aged in French oak barrels with a portion new, finishing around 14.5% ABV in a 750ml bottle. The current release shows generous aromas of plum and cassis with a touch of cedar, then ripe plum and dark cherry on a rich, full-bodied palate framed by hints of cacao, espresso bean and a little vanilla, with smooth, rounded tannins that make it easy to enjoy young. It is the kind of Napa Cabernet that works equally well at a steakhouse or a backyard grill; pair it with a grilled ribeye, lamb kebabs, mushroom burgers or a hard aged cheese.
