818 Blanco won Best Blanco at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition — and Drinkhacker admits it went in expecting to hate Kendall Jenner's tequila and came out curious. 818 is named for the Calabasas area code where Jenner grew up; she launched it in 2021 after years of development, entered it blind in competitions to answer the celebrity critics, and now makes it at NOM 1607, Grupo Solave in Amatitán, with director of tequila operations David Yan González, a master tequilero with 26 years in the industry. It's 100% blue Weber agave cooked in brick ovens, crushed by tahona, fermented in open-air tanks with natural yeast, and distilled in copper pots; the Blanco is rested briefly in oak for what the brand calls a fresh vanilla roundness, then filtered clear, bottled at 40% ABV. Spent agave becomes adobe bricks for community projects through the 818 Bricks Program. Drinkhacker: very sweet on the nose, vanilla roundness front and center with pastry cream and strawberry, only a bare hint of agave — built to please. Honest note, and it's the whole conversation: 818 is a deliberately soft, sweet, smooth style, and enthusiasts chasing agave-forward purity say so loudly — 12x75 points them to Fortaleza or G4 at the price.
