Arette Anejo Tequila
Arette Añejo is the classic line's aged bottle from El Llano — the distillery in the center of the town of Tequila that the Orendain family has run since the early 1900s. Arette is one of the few brands still made in Tequila itself, at NOM 1109; brothers Eduardo and Jaime Orendain, fifth-generation master distillers, run it today — Eduardo is a former mayor of Tequila and president of the national tequila chamber — and the brand launched in 1986, named for Arete, the horse that won Mexico's only Olympic gold medals in show jumping in 1948. The Añejo is 100% estate-grown blue Weber agave from the outskirts of Tequila, cooked in a blend of stone oven and autoclave, roller-milled, fermented in stainless and cement, double-distilled, and aged around eighteen months in American oak, bottled at 40% ABV — additive-free, confirmed. Long Island Lou calls the classic line one of the best value brands in tequila, and the Artesanal line the sipping upgrade. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak with the valley's earthy mineral underneath, opening into a rounded, medium-bodied palate of agave, dried fruit, cinnamon, and gentle wood with a warm, moderately long finish that keeps the agave in front. Honest note: it's a working añejo at a working price — the Artesanal Añejo up the shelf is the one for the Glencairn, and this one is for the Old Fashioned. For a tequila Old Fashioned, a Manhattan, or on the rocks. Made in Tequila, aged.
