Astral Añejo is the top of the line Diageo built after buying Richard Betts' tequila — launched alongside the Reposado in April 2023 as the brand's first aged expressions. Astral was created by Betts, the sommelier behind Sombra Mezcal, and came to Diageo in the 2020 Davos Brands deal alongside Aviation Gin; Diageo moved production to NOM 1607, Mieles Campos Azules in Amatitán — a distillery it shares with only one other brand, 818 — and kept the tahona at the center of the process. The Añejo is 100% blue Weber agave cooked, crushed by a stone tahona with the fibers left in the fermentation, double-distilled in copper pots, aged more than a year in single-use American oak bourbon barrels, and bottled at 40% ABV, additive-free. Drinkhacker reviewed the Reposado and Añejo together on their launch, and Tequila Aficionado found the aged line subtly sweet and rich with agave, caramel, and oak.
