Bruxo means "wizard" in Portuguese, and the X is for the way Oaxaca and México are pronounced — a brand built by a group of friends who fell for mezcal and, they say, above all for its people. No. 1 is where the line starts: 100% espadín, distilled in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca by master mezcalero Lucio Morales, pit-roasted over wood, crushed, naturally fermented, and copper-pot distilled, bottled at 46% ABV with a wax seal. Every lot varies slightly; check yours. Difford's found toasty agave, charcoal, coal dust, and black pepper with light smoke and faint white grape on the nose, then a dry, smoky palate of roasted agave and charcoal, finishing on charcoal, peppery spice, and lingering smoke. Mezcal Reviews' drinkers found lime, pumpkin seed, black pepper, and vanilla with a peaty, dry-white-wine finish — one flagged oatmeal-raisin cookie, cheesecake, Oaxacan chocolate, and pipe tobacco and immediately made Espresso Martinis with it. Mezcal Pro's consensus: a solid, smoky, citrusy espadín at an accessible price, a recurring guest on the home shelf. Honest note: enthusiasts call it a good everyday and cocktail espadín rather than a showpiece — and point you to Bruxo's other numbers for that. For a Mezcal Margarita, a Naked & Famous, an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, or a first neat pour, it's the wizard's opening trick. Distinctive charcoal, honest price.
