Bruxo Mezcal Artesanal Joven No. 4 Cuishe Barril Espadin
No. 4 is the Bruxo that beat its more expensive sibling in a side-by-side. Mezcal Pro's tasters bought No. 3 and No. 4 together in Oaxaca, and at around $45 found this three-agave blend smoother and tastier than the single-barril No. 3 — an easy decision, they said, at the price. Bruxo means "wizard" in Portuguese, and the X is for the way Oaxaca and México are pronounced; the brand was built by a group of friends who fell for mezcal and its people. This ensamble marries cultivated espadín with two wild Agave karwinskii — cuishe, the tall, thin-trunked agave of the dry valleys, and barril, the thick-leaved one Oaxacans plant as fencing — pit-roasted over wood, crushed, naturally fermented, and copper-pot distilled in San Dionisio Ocotepec, bottled at around 46% ABV with a wax seal; every lot varies slightly, so check yours. Expect roasted agave and soft smoke on the nose with green herbs and citrus from the karwinskii pair, opening into a balanced palate where the espadín brings sweetness and body, the cuishe brings an herbal, mineral edge, and the barril adds florals and a creamy roundness, finishing long and gently smoky with pepper. Honest note: it's a blend, and purists chasing single-agave expressions should look at No. 3 or No. 5 — but as a sipper and a cocktail base at once, it's the sweet spot of the Bruxo line. Neat, or a Mezcal Negroni, Paloma, or Last Word riff.
