Wine Enthusiast found charred pineapple in Chamucos Añejo — a fruity-smoky profile of pineapple and pear with a waft of smoke, finishing on vanilla and clove. Chamucos was conceived in 1992 by Oscar-nominated Mexican film director Antonio Urrutia and his friend César Hernández, a hand-blown glass artist; the chamucos are the dark, shadowy creatures of Mexican folklore who visit briefly in dreams, and they dance across a recycled-glass bottle whose cut-out label folds into a three-dimensional piece. The Añejo is 100% organic Los Altos highland agave, cooked, fermented, distilled in a custom stainless alembic, aged in new oak for the añejo term, and bottled at 40% ABV; the brand has moved distilleries over the years — NOM 1433, 1414, 1558, and 1586 — so check your bottle, and Agave Matchmaker's tasters say to buy the older 1414 lots when you find them in the wild. Their notes: agave, caramel, and vanilla sweetness with cherry and almond, nice barrel spice, a moderately sweet finish, mellow and long — one of the better Chamucos expressions, and, unlike the Blanco and Diablo, not so funky. Honest note: the Añejo is the gentle one in a wild line — the bottle for the drinker who loves the packaging and wants an approachable, vanilla-and-fruit sipper rather than the Blanco's savory funk. Neat, on a big cube, or in a tequila Old Fashioned. The shadow creatures, aged.
